The Knights of Pythias (K of P) founded the old section of the Cemetery in 1891.
It consisted of 5 acres and was purchased from the Claude Hamiton Farm. In 1938 the Knights of Pythias Corsican Lodge # 182 disbanded and therefore abandoned the Cemetery. The Cemetery was in limbo with no supervision from 1938 until May 6, 1948 when  the City of Deepwater took over maintenance of the Cemetery.
Board Members, Elsie Quick, Christine Hills, Kathleen Smith and Nadine Denny worked tirelessly to finally gather $10,000 for a perpetual fund account. As of January 1, 2009, the City of Deepwater had begun to operate this fund per State Statue # 214.320.
The Board was reorganized on January 1, 2008 with Susan Witherspoon as President, Bradley Smart , Vice President, Lawanna Young, Secretary, and Gary E. Sapp, Treasurer. In 2009 this Board found, named and bought granite markers for 26 unmarked graves. In 2010, the Board bought another 42 granite markers for unmarked graves. This was done with donations collected during the Momorial Day Weekend.
In 1976. Ralph and Ruby Smith donated an additional 2 acres of land adjacent to the southside of the K and P Cemetery to be called the Ralph Smith Memorial Section of the Deepwater Cemetery. The grave were to be flat stones per Mr. Smiths wishes. In 2010 the City Council changed the rules to allow upright stones in the future. This was very much against the feelings of the Cemetery Board.
You will find several Civil War Veterans plus numerous other Military Veterans buried here. Each Memorial Day, flags are put on Veterans graves.
If you are looking for genealogical information, see contact info below , and we will do what we can to help you. Individual records have not been kept, but the board is endeavoring to make records. If you know of an unmarked grave, please let us know. It is our desire to mark all possible.
